Have you noticed this? Tasks that used to be simple, such as zipping up a dress or reaching up to the top shelf for a jar, suddenly seem a little harder. Cutting your toenails can become extremely difficult.
As we age, our muscles tighten and range of motion in the joints is lessened. A regular stretching programme can help lengthen your muscles and make daily living activities easier.
We can all learn to stretch, regardless of age or flexibility.
Stretching should be a part of your daily routine, regardless of whether you exercise or not. There are simple stretches you can do while watching TV, on the computer, or getting ready for bed.
As they say - Move it or Lose it!
Benefits
Stretching comes naturally to all of us. You might notice that if you have been sitting in a particular position for a long time, you stretch unconsciously. It feels good! In addition to that good feeling, a consistent stretching programme will produce large gains in flexibility and joint movement. Be kind to your muscles and they will be kind to you!
The Right Way to Stretch
The Wrong Way to Stretch
Stretching is not exercise
You are stretching, not exercising. You don’t need to push it. Stretching is a mild, gentle activity.
For some incredibly simple stretches with photos see Five Fantastic Stretching Exercises from Debbie Pitchford (I always need a clear photo or else I fail to understand instructions).

2I have had a form of Arthritis called Ankylosing Spondylitis for 15 years and have never had any help from my GP. The best thing I ever did was buy a Tens machine. It really does work for my particular ailment. Better than any pills.
