Stretching is important for everyone

Middle Aged Couple StretchingHave you noticed this? Tasks that used to be simple, such as zipping up a dress or reaching up to the top shelf for a jar,  suddenly seem a little harder. Cutting your toenails can become extremely difficult.

As we age, our muscles tighten and range of motion in the joints is lessened.  A regular stretching programme can help lengthen your muscles and make daily living activities easier.

We can all learn to stretch, regardless of age or flexibility.

Stretching should be a part of your daily routine, regardless of whether you exercise or not. There are simple stretches you can do while watching TV, on the computer, or getting ready for bed.

As they say – Move it or Lose it!

Benefits

  • Reduced muscle tension
  • Increased range of movement in the joints
  • Enhanced muscular coordination
  • Increased circulation of the blood to various parts of the body
  • Increased energy levels (resulting from increased circulation)
  • Reduce anxiety, stress, and fatigue
  • Improve mental alertness
  • Tune your mind into your body
  • Feel better!

Stretching comes naturally to all of us. You might notice that if you have been sitting in a particular position for a long time, you stretch unconsciously. It feels good! In addition to that good feeling, a consistent stretching programme will produce large gains in flexibility and joint movement. Be kind to your muscles and they will be kind to you!

The Right Way to Stretch

  • Breathe easily
  • Relax
  • Tune into your body
  • Focus on muscles and joints being stretched
  • Feel the stretch
  • Be guided by the feel of the stretch
  • No bouncing
  • No pain

The Wrong Way to Stretch

  • Holding your breath
  • Being in a hurry
  • Not being focused on your body
  • Stretching while tense
  • Bouncing
  • Stretching to the point of pain

Stretching is not exercise

You are stretching, not exercising. You don’t need to push it. Stretching is a mild, gentle activity.
