Challenging the Change

Review The Sexy Years

June 5th, 2008 in Reviews

I don’t know about you but the title of this book doesn’t inspire my confidence. The cover even less so.

But you know the old cliche, you can’t judge a book by its cover, and in this case I’m not judging but ignoring the cover completely.

Suzanne Somers provides excellent inspiration to take charge of your life, to take control of the Change yourself. She covers her own experience of menopause, including some detail on her breast cancer ordeal, and adds plenty of personal stories from other women in The Sexy Years: Discover the Hormone Connection

When Somers encountered what she calls the Seven Dwarfs of Menopause • Itchy • Bitchy • Sweaty • Sleepy • Bloated • Forgetful and • All-Dried Up, she set out to discover how she could get her mind, body, and life back.

Suzanne says that the second half of life has been more rewarding, fun, and purposeful than her younger years. The key to her happiness? She says it’s taking natural bioidentical hormones — natural hormones which mimic the hormones we produce, and which we lose with aging.

There are helpful descriptions of how hormones work, and some interesting interviews with physicians who use bioidentical hormones in their medical practices.

Not for all Women

While this book advocates the use of natural, bioidentical hormonal replacement, it doesn’t make it clear enough that bio-identical hormones aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be. No two women are alike. In some cases they could have serious impacts on the human body.

What is excellent about this book is the structural layout in which questions are laid out and answered by various medical consultants. Incidentally, these are good questions to ask your own doctor.

This is a comforting book, I enjoyed the stories from Suzanne and the other women on their experiences of menopause. It’s always reassuring to know that other women are feeling as I feel, and the Seven Dwarves had me jumping up and down saying “Yes! Yes!”.

However, be aware that not all women can emulate this regime of bioidentical hormones.

Never blindly follow instructions without first checking in to your health professional. If you are taking some prescribed medication all sorts of side effects may possibly occur.

The point of this book is the message to Take Charge of your own Change.
